"The Port of Hamburg"

Exhibition Opening at Factory of the Arts

From June 14 to July 6, Factory of the Arts presents "The Port of Hamburg" in collaboration with the F.C. Gundlach Foundation. The exhibition showcases striking black-and-white photographs by renowned photographers F.C. Gundlach, Hans Meyer-Veden, Paolo Pellegrin, and Peter Schulte—capturing the evolution of Hamburg's port across six decades.

Around 1960, F.C. Gundlach (1926–2021) captured something truly avant-garde: fashion amid the industrial landscape of Hamburg's port. His images juxtapose high fashion against rusty steel, tugboats, and cargo ships with a compositional tension and timeless elegance that still resonates today.

Since the 1970s, Hans Meyer-Veden (1931–2018) has documented Altona and the harbor district with meticulous observation and technical precision, revealing details that might otherwise go unnoticed. His photographs serve as vital records of a port transformed—a place now virtually unrecognizable from the one he captured.

Paolo Pellegrin (1964) examines this vast, self-contained "district" and its striking graphic composition of technology and landscape. Through his lens, the photographs embody the economic vitality and industrial power that define the city.

Peter Schulte (1965) has spent over three decades assembling views and fragments of Hamburg and its harbor. His work combines documentary clarity with visual intrigue: reflections, layered perspectives, and bold angles invite viewers to discover small revelations and moments of wonder with each careful look.
