CO₂ footprint reduced

Manufacturers of acoustic panels with new measures

Over a period of three years, Danish developer and manufacturer of acoustic solutions for walls and ceilings Troldtekt has reduced its carbon footprint per square metre of acoustic panels produced by 6.9 per cent. This is shown by data from Troldtekt's CSR report for 2023. The reduction was achieved in Scope 3, which specifically includes cement from Aalborg Portland. The reduction
is partly due to the Futurecem™ type of cement.

Cement is essential to Troldtekt® acoustic panels, delivering the durability, fire resistance, and longevity they're known for. Yet it also accounts for virtually all of their carbon footprint. In 2023 alone, Troldtekt reduced emissions by 4.3 per cent per square metre—bringing the three-year reduction (2020–2023) to 6.9 per cent. These figures appear in the company's 2023 CSR report, which reveals that Scope 3 (primarily cement procurement) represents 99 per cent of total emissions. At Troldtekt's own facility, by contrast, renewable sources—biofuel and wind power—supplied 94.5 per cent of energy in 2023. This figure dipped slightly from previous years due to scheduled maintenance on the biofuel boiler.

Reducing CO₂ is critical to the construction industry's future. We've spent years bringing our facility to near 100 per cent renewable energy, and we're now tackling the harder challenge of Scope 3 emissions. Our ambition is to drive down our carbon footprint significantly by introducing new cement types into our manufacturing process," says Tina Snedker Kristensen, Head of Sustainability and Communication at Troldtekt A/S.

By 2023, Troldtekt will have doubled the proportion of acoustic panels
produced using Futurecem cement. Together with other reductions at Aalborg Portland, this has contributed significantly to the reduction in the carbon footprint. Futurecem utilises the synergy between calcined clay and lime fillers, which can replace a large proportion of the burnt cement clinker. Troldtekt acoustic panels based on Futurecem have a carbon footprint over the entire product life cycle that:

• 26 per cent lower than for Troldtekt panels based on grey
cement• 38 per cent lower than for Troldtekt panels based on white cement.

In 2023, Futurecem-based panels nearly doubled their share of production, making up almost as much volume as conventional grey cement. This proportion will grow further when we phase out conventional grey cement production entirely from 2024 onwards," explains Snedker Kristensen. She adds that Troldtekt is simultaneously beginning to replace white cement with Futurecem across its light-coloured panel range.

The carbon footprint reduction and doubling of Futurecem-based production are headline achievements in the 2023 CSR report. Three other milestones stand out:

> In autumn 2023, the series received Gold recertification according to Cradle to Cradle Certified® with Troldtekt acoustic solutions in natural and standard colours grey, white, clay and black. Troldtekt is certified according to version 4.0 of the concept in three out of five categories, with the requirements having been made even more stringent. These categories are Material Health, Renewable Energy & Carbon Management, and Water & Soil Stewardship. Troldtekt will be certified according to version 4.0 in Material Reutilisation and Social Fairness in 2025.

Troldtekt has installed a heat exchanger that utilises waste heat from the drying process in production. This pilot project has resulted in a 30 per cent reduction in energy consumption in the drying areas where the trial was conducted. The goal now is to install heat exchangers in several oven sections in production.

> In 2023, Troldtekt began working towards achieving two ISO certifications in 2024: ISO 9001 (quality management) and ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety management). This will incorporate all
core processes into the system and lay a solid foundation for future improvements.
