Co-Op! Young Architecture – What's Next?
Discussion forum and exhibition
As a critical perspective on today's architectural practice, BDA Berlin and BDA Hamburg present the joint exhibition "Co-Op! Young Architecture – What's Next?" Architects bring a distinctive capacity for innovation – they think boldly, embrace unconventional approaches, and forge meaningful collaborations. In doing so, they create pathways to thrive in a challenging marketplace while making vital contributions to urban life and architectural culture. How are emerging practices navigating the landscape today? And what strategic potential do collaborative models hold for securing commissions and building sustainable practices?
The collaborations featured in this exhibition demonstrate how young architects are rethinking architectural practice beyond conventional models. These practices chart new territory, proving that innovation remains possible even within strict regulatory frameworks. Yet young and emerging firms increasingly face barriers to market access through traditional competition and procurement channels. New strategies are essential to establish our work as a source of innovation and quality. As the construction sector undergoes transformation and faces economic pressures, collaborative models addressing participatory design, climate action, and sustainability grow ever more relevant. Meanwhile, the expanding focus on building renovation is reshaping architectural practice itself: many retrofits require minimal regulatory approval, and new players beyond traditional architecture are reshaping how buildings come into being. These shifts deserve serious discussion.
This exhibition fosters open dialogue on excellent young architecture, bridging professional policy, public procurement, and real-world practice. Companion forums will address "Living Collaboration: Making It Work" and "Competition and Procurement: A Critical Look" in both Berlin and Hamburg. We welcome young architects from both cities—BDA members and beyond—to join the conversation. Co-Op! is curated by BDA Hamburg, BDA Gallery Berlin, and the BDA Berlin Working Group for Strengthening Young Practices. The opening takes place on 16 May at 7 p.m. at BDA Gallery Berlin, featuring presentations from participating practices followed by open discussion. The exhibition moves to BDA Gallery Hamburg from September 2025 onwards.
