Customized lighting solutions for interdisciplinary research in extraordinary architecture
The interdisciplinary research facility CSSB (Center for Structural Systems Biology) has been located on the DESY campus in Bahrenfeld since 2017. In the new building designed by hammeskrause Architekten, around 180 scientists from the fields of biology, medicine, chemistry and physics are researching the fundamentals of infectious diseases and resistance. Around 30 percent of the floor space is taken up by special laboratories, plus offices, meeting and conference rooms and a lecture hall. The architecture and lighting are coordinated both aesthetically and functionally. Thanks to the special lighting expertise of Trilux Architectural, the custom-made products could be implemented in close consultation with the responsible lighting design office Winter - Beratende Ingenieure für Gebäudetechnik.
High up under the glazed ceiling of the foyer, three huge light rings float seemingly weightlessly, which were specially developed for the CSSB and, with a diameter of 4 and 6 m, fit perfectly into the open space. They are far more than just a decorative element: the light sculptures ensure a standard-compliant level of general lighting in the open meeting and communication areas. The 95 round luminous ceilings in four different sizes are also custom-made. The highly translucent light foils are flush with the intermediate ceilings of the galleries and are also used in a wide variety of combinations and arrangements in the lecture hall, cafeteria and pre-zones. Thanks to their excellent lighting quality, they ensure a high level of visual comfort - and also contribute to a uniform building identity as a recurring light signet.
In the laboratory landscapes, the E-Line LED continuous-row system with a total of 1,369 luminaire inserts with wide-beam lens optics provides pleasant, glare-free task lighting at the workbenches, including an emergency lighting function. In offices, corridors and hallways, the extremely flexible Coriflex LED continuous-row lighting system can be perfectly adapted to the respective area of use thanks to a wide selection of luminaire modules and system components. 750 Coriflex luminaire inserts were installed throughout the building, some with integrated emergency lighting components. Small and discreet in design, but with a great lighting effect, around 150 Inperla Ligra Plus downlights, almost invisibly plastered in, provide standard-compliant light and at the same time skillfully showcase the architecture with highlights and accents - such as on the sculptural spiral staircase in the foyer.
