Building transformation that makes an industrial past tangible

The Noxx Hotel masterfully bridges history and contemporary design. Part of the Lokschuppen Marburg lifestyle complex, it breathes new life into an industrial landmark—transforming it into a vibrant hub for connection, work, leisure, and rest. Spanning six new floors and built atop the remains of a former machine hall, the hotel features 82 rooms, seminar spaces, a fitness facility, a bar, and a rooftop terrace offering sweeping panoramic views.

The building achieves Efficiency House 55 EE certification through heat pumps, photovoltaics, and intelligent building systems—all while honoring a powerful narrative of industrial heritage, modern engineering, and genuine hospitality. Studio Aberja's interior design transforms the site's industrial past into a vibrant backdrop for contemporary living. Upon entering the lobby, the designers' vision becomes immediately apparent: the space's industrial character—exposed concrete columns, weathered brick, and custom steel washbasins—speaks to both craft and technology, while warm tones and textures introduce refinement and warmth. Rather than erasing the building's history, the designers chose to reimagine it. Twenty-four cylindrical columns on the ground floor become the room's focal point, unified with benches, shelves, tables, and floor-to-ceiling luminaires into a sculptural, walkable installation that echoes a monumental machine—a poetic reference to the engineering prowess once housed here. Yet materials and colors deliberately soften this industrial vocabulary, creating an ensemble that feels simultaneously purposeful and inviting. The guest rooms echo this same duality through a thoughtfully curated system of built-in furnishings—shelves, wardrobes, washstands—that harmonizes the building's varied floor plans while maintaining individual character. This homogeneous approach brings coherence without monotony. A distinctive collaboration with the developer—whose passion for precision and technical excellence proved foundational—shaped every aspect of the design. This partnership yielded the Noxx Signature luminaire: a parametrically designed light sculpture whose undulating surface creates an interplay of shadow and reflection that mirrors the human iris, symbolizing perception, focus, and depth.
