The Düsseldorf-based architecture and interior design studio bkp has created a modular design concept for Stadtsparkasse Düsseldorf that establishes a distinctive, recognizable identity across all branch locations throughout the state capital. Three core modules work together—appearing consistently across every location while remaining thoughtfully adapted to each district's unique character. The transformation begins with the newly redesigned branch in Oberbilk.

Three key design elements now define all Düsseldorf Sparkasse locations: a striking wall graphic by artist Moritz Blumentritt—featuring district-specific imagery—anchors each space; a central wooden reception desk reinforces the bank's commitment to warm customer service; and the innovative "Sparkassen-Büdchen," a flexible room-within-a-room element that adapts to multiple functions. Carefully selected accent colours and a refined interpretation of the brand's signature red tie these elements together while staying true to the bank's identity. The design also includes locally inspired consultation rooms and casual coffee points—informal gathering spaces that encourage genuine connection. The transition to the office area remains intentionally open and flowing, ensuring staff are accessible and approachable. The staff kitchen provides necessary respite and a space for colleagues to recharge. Together, these elements—welcoming reception areas, informal meeting zones, and open office spaces—foster genuine closeness and approachability. Meanwhile, region-specific design details anchor each branch firmly within its neighbourhood. Consultation rooms, for instance, feature refined illustrations of local landmarks—the old town, the Rhine, architectural heritage, and neighbourhood parks—subtly rendered in soft, understated tones that celebrate the city's character. The "Sparkassen-Büdchen," by contrast, draws inspiration from Düsseldorf's iconic tiled kiosks through its large-format tilework. Nodding to the distinctly Rhineland tradition of the neighbourhood kiosk, this space handles quick transactions effortlessly—say, setting up personal online banking. Beyond its role in brief consultations, the Büdchen serves as a waiting area, gathering point, and information hub, stocked with curated local products and neighbourhood insights to explore, dwell on, and discuss.
