Turn one into four
A historic villa is harmoniously complemented by individual new buildings
A listed villa in the south of Bonn with a spacious, park-like plot on the edge of the forest - this was the starting point for the development of a total of four urban villas planned and realized by Krense Architekten. The Cologne-based architecture firm developed a solution for the four clients interested in architecture that exploited the potential of the plot without ignoring the characteristics of the existing building.
Only part of the existing park was allowed to be built on - the existing protected historic tree population placed strict limits on densification from the outset. In close consultation with the conservation authorities, the architects developed a development of three individual houses, which were slightly offset on both sides of the existing building. The historic villa was also renovated and converted by removing a later, unlisted extension and adding a new wing to create a courtyard situation in front of the building with additional granny apartments. The two two- to three-storey residential buildings, which complement the existing building on the other side, are also characterized by individual floor plans. With living areas of between 250 and 450 m², they offer enough space for four families with children. As individually designed as they are, they speak a common architectural language: with their cubic, often narrow and elongated volumes and the white plaster façade, they relate harmoniously to the existing historical buildings without denying their independence. The interior is dominated by spacious rooms, some of which extend over two storeys and are optimally lit from several sides via window openings. The transparent surfaces are protected from summer heat by external external venetian blinds, sliding shutters and awnings. A multitude of visual axes open up both inside and out into the park, which has been parceled out into individual gardens without giving up its spacious overall character. Terraces running around the houses and outdoor seating areas on the upper floors create a series of attractive outdoor spaces. A minimalist feel-good atmosphere has also been created inside with just a few high-quality materials. The integrated LED lighting and sculptural light objects give the rooms an artistic feel.
