Meeting as Equals

A Health Insurer's Philosophy Takes Shape in Its New Building

The AOK Rheinland/Hamburg's self-designation as a "health insurance fund" signals a fundamental shift in the healthcare industry—one focused not just on treatment but on prevention and genuine proximity to a diverse clientele. This philosophy guided kplus konzept as it developed a comprehensive branch concept for the provider's Duisburg-Hamborn office. The mandate was clear: prioritize service and well-being.

The organization's signature forest green—evoking nature, vitality, and wellness—pairs seamlessly with warm wood tones throughout. Wooden floors, wall paneling, and furnishings combined with living plants create an inviting, residential quality. The reception desk, backed by a living plant wall and fielding up to 550 visitors daily, evokes the warmth of a boutique hotel. An expansive waiting area centers around a tree with seating platforms, individual chairs, and side tables—designed to put people at ease. A dedicated "health station" lets visitors turn wait time into wellness time through movement and interactive information. Open consultation spaces blend a multifunctional coffee bar with flexible seating, adapting effortlessly to different conversations. The "consultation plaza" accommodates moderately complex discussions and doubles as a "health marketplace," with mobile, foldable furniture and adaptive technology supporting gatherings of up to 100 people. Private conversations unfold in soundproofed consultation pods—including a "living room" outfitted with a sofa and mobile work technology—ensuring sensitive discussions remain confidential. Throughout, mobile devices integrate seamlessly into the spatial design for maximum adaptability.

Health and sustainability anchored every design decision from the outset. Materials were sourced regionally whenever possible and manufactured with environmental responsibility and resource efficiency in mind. Acoustic performance came through multilayered felt panels and sound-absorbing textiles. Furnishings and finishes prioritized products carrying recognized environmental certifications—the Blue Angel seal, for instance—selected for their durability and freedom from harmful emissions. PET-recycled felt and Benjamin Hubert's Pod Privacy Chairs exemplify this commitment to circular design. The AOK office opens its doors on Architecture Day, June 18–19.
