Where art and guests meet
Essen's first concierge hotel at the trade fair impresses with its comfort and ambience
Mintrop's Concierge Hotel offers its (long-term) guests 52 modern apartments with a functional design, an innovative check-in and check-out concept and an impressive art experience with large-scale video installations in the glass stairwell and paintings by the renowned Berlin-based artist couple Anne and Martin Müller.
Essen architects Holger Jesberg and Frank Bitting have fitted the hotel into a gap between buildings in the densely built-up district in such a way that the different building heights to the neighbors are harmoniously taken up. The transition is marked by a barrel roof that spans an arc from the lower to the higher part of the building. The façade is divided by a completely glazed stairwell, which divides the building into two independent parts. On the left, adjacent to the tall neighboring building, the façade is clad with a high-quality clinker brick shell - a reminiscence of the architecture of the Ruhr region. A bay construction from the first to the fifth floor is surrounded by a spline, whose lively structure emerges from the solid clinker brick shell. The right-hand side presents itself as an independent component that floats above the access road leading to 16 parking spaces at the rear of the property. The façade here is made of fiber cement panels, with the bay windows of the apartments echoing the element on the left-hand side of the building. The floor plans reflect the requirement for apartments of different sizes ranging from 20 to 50 m², one of which is barrier-free. Smaller one-room solutions and larger apartments with a separate bedroom were created. Nine of the apartments have balconies and two have a spacious roof terrace. In the apartments, interior designer Klaus Schulte attached great importance to the guests' sense of well-being. This is why warm colors characterize the differently sized apartments, which become a temporary home for guests. The classic division of the living, eating and sleeping areas applies to both the one-room apartments and the apartments with separate sleeping berths. These are integrated into the living area and can be accessed via sliding glass doors to save space. Even on a tight budget, the interior designer from Iserlohn has succeeded in meeting high quality standards in terms of design and function. The beds are larger than standard, the mattresses are high quality and comfortable and there are TVs in both the bunk beds and the living area. Comfortable sofas and armchairs complete the living area and each apartment has an individual painting by artist Martin Müller adorning the walls. The integrated kitchenettes with their minimalist design are superbly equipped. The apartments are completed by spacious shower bathrooms in classic gray/white.
