Room O
Steel sculpture amidst ancient sculptures
A walk-in sculpture entitled "Room O" by steel constructor Christian Neumaier and his partner Hildegard Rasthofer can be seen in the inner courtyard of the Glyptothek until April 14, 2024. It is an object made of mirror-polished stainless steel, consisting of individual curved elements. These form a round space that can be entered from all sides in the shape of a rotunda with a diameter of nine meters. The gently moving wings provide access to the empty interior. Room O" now presents itself almost naturally, as if it had always been here. The mirror-polished steel sculpture does not reveal the countless hours it took to create it. It is only possible to guess how much effort, creative will, expertise and idealism went into creating this installation. Hildegard Rasthofer, architect, and Christian Neumaier, metalworker and master blacksmith, conceived and realized the work. Once again, they have created a masterpiece - after the vertical, walk-in steel sculpture "Sichtung". The new, round sculpture has a diameter of 9.5 meters - and a height of 3.6 meters. Six curved, mirror-like kinetic parts swing against each other like double doors, creating an opening that allows access to the interior. With this work, the Glyptothek is once again showing a work of art as a special exhibition - works by Jim Dine and Santiago Calatrava have previously been on display, to name just the best known. The 23.5-ton sculpture was delivered by low-loader and hoisted by crane from Königsplatz over the roof of the Klenze building and into the inner courtyard.
