Space and warmth

A place brimming with vitality

The property sits on the southern edge of a newly developed area just east of Stuttgart. This emerging residential quarter unfolds north of the town centre, cascading down a south-facing slope with sweeping views across the Neckar Valley toward the silhouette of the Swabian Alb. Characterised largely by conventional developer-driven architecture, the neighbourhood stands in stark contrast to this home designed by Finckh Architects—a project that confidently charts its own course. Rather than echo the surrounding built fabric, the design draws its inspiration directly from the site's unique conditions and programme.

A simple, refined volume is embraced by two striking white-glazed concrete gable walls that descend from ridge to ground on the south facade. These walls double as rain gutters, channelling the roof's water into the garden below. Between these two defining planes, the house unfolds in a sequence of terraces, opening generously southward through expansive glazing. The result: bright, inviting living spaces with expansive views and an intimate dialogue with nature. The landscape's natural rise finds its architectural expression here. This gesture of openness—toward the valley, the distant horizon, and the warming sun—captures the very energy of the place and shares it with those who dwell within. A space charged with possibility.

The cubic facades facing the existing neighbourhood maintain a more restrained demeanour, punctuated by carefully positioned, well-proportioned windows. The house's two levels follow a clear functional logic: the lower floor houses private retreats, each with its own direct relationship to nature; the upper level, almost meditative in character, accommodates the main living spaces. An expansive roof level—with kitchen, dining, lounge, and a generous south-facing terrace framing the distant view—radiates freedom and openness.

Exposed reinforced concrete with core-insulated walls—pigmented white outside, left raw inside—combined with thermally activated floors for heating and cooling, ensures consistent comfort year-round. High-calibre, honest materials with tactile warmth give the building unmistakable character. Built to last from durable, time-tested materials, this home will serve its residents for decades to come. A sophisticated building services system—featuring geothermal heating and integrated rooftop photovoltaics—delivers carbon-neutral, environmentally conscious operation with genuine efficiency.
