One with Nature
The Fuchsegg Eco Lodge in Bregenzerwald merges sustainable design with the restorative qualities of regional materials and colors.
There are places where everything suddenly becomes calm and peaceful the moment we step inside. The Fuchs-egg Eco Lodge is precisely one of these sanctuaries. Perched at over 1,060 metres in one of Vorarlberg's most breathtaking landscapes, it's surrounded by meadows, forests, and mountains. Designed by architects Ludescher + Lutz, the ensemble of six buildings seamlessly integrates into its surroundings through elegant, carefully considered architecture—award-winning in its restraint. Drawing inspiration from traditional Vorsäß huts, the lodge's design weaves together regional building techniques with sustainable materials. This connection to nature flows through every corner of the retreat, which comprises 30 individually designed living spaces distributed across three houses. "We wanted our guests to move between buildings through the open air," explains Carmen Can, the lodge's creator. "Walking to the sauna or restaurant, breathing in fresh air, experiencing the changing seasons, gazing at the sky—all while feeling rooted in nature." With this lodge, she's realised a project that's clearly close to her heart.
The interior's colour palette was born from an unlikely muse: the blueberry. For Carmen Can, these berries evoke childhood memories—long walks with her grandmother, the taste and scent of Bregenzerwald summers. So she brought a handful of fresh berries to a local tile manufacturer. The result: a custom glaze formulation capturing the fruit's full spectrum, from deep indigo through violet to deep burgundy, translated onto ceramic. The tiles now adorning the fireplace in the guest house became the visual foundation for the lodge's entire colour language. Rich blue lounge chairs and daybeds play against warm cognac accents—a nod to the porcini mushrooms flourishing in the surrounding forest. Every piece reflects both quality and purpose: solid ash and elm beds, bespoke upholstered furniture, Samina sleep systems, and locally sourced herbal pillows. For the walls, lime plaster from the nearby Kanisfluh mountain was applied in layers and meticulously finished, creating a sense of calm depth throughout. The main guesthouse anchors the complex, housing a restaurant, fireplace bar, wine cellar, library, lounge, and yoga studios—and its doors are open to locals as well. Here, the lodge delivers everything a true refuge should: respite, connection to place, and perhaps most meaningfully, a sense of coming home—to the landscape, to the region, and to yourself.
