From Work to Display
Exhibition at Kunstmuseum Stuttgart
How can artworks retain their unique essence when presented in digital space? This central question drove a groundbreaking multi-year research initiative by Kunstmuseum Stuttgart and Kunsthalle Mannheim titled "From Work to Display." The project's innovative results are now on view in both museums' collection presentations through November 2nd.Museums face a pivotal challenge: How do we actively embrace digital transformation? How do we authentically convey an artwork's distinctive qualities in the virtual realm? The project sought to answer these questions by thoughtfully integrating analog and digital approaches—merging them conceptually and aesthetically into a seamless experience. Supported by the German Federal Cultural Foundation's "Kultur Digital" program, the initiative brought together specialized agencies Fluxguide and Wegesrand, both leaders in immersive digital museum experiences, alongside partners including the International Animation Film Festival Stuttgart (ITFS) and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
The project created 22 innovative digital episodes exploring new, experimental approaches to engaging audiences in virtual environments. Museum visitors can experience artworks from both angles—comparing originals directly with their digital interpretations. At Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, visitors can interactively unpack the interplay of color, form, and contrast in Johannes Itten's "Der Bachsänger" (The Nightingale Singer). The figures in Otto Dix's triptych "Großstadt" (Big City) spring to life virtually, each recounting the scene's narrative from their own unique vantage point. An interactive digital artboard lets visitors remix elements from Mona Ardeleanu's works into original collages and new compositions. Additional episodes showcase works by Willi Baumeister, Hanne Brenken, Rebecca Horn, Wolfgang Laib, Josephine Meckseper, Dieter Roth, and Mirja Wellmann.
