Retrofit – Nonstop Transformation

Exhibition Opening at the Munich Architecture Gallery

"Retrofit – Nonstop Transformation" is the title of an exhibition by gmp Architects running at the Munich Architecture Gallery from Thursday, November 13 through December 7. Retrofit represents the continuous transformation of existing building stock. Given today's climate imperatives, retrofitting must shift from exception to standard practice. With this mission in mind, gmp presents a curated selection of approximately 100 retrofit projects as concrete case studies for discussion – including two Munich landmarks: the Isar Philharmonic Hall and Hall E at Gasteig HP8, as well as the European Patent Office building. These projects share a common conceptual approach to retrofitting: grounded in thorough existing conditions analysis, the original structure is preserved and evolved as architectural progression.

Experience demonstrates that adaptive reuse must accommodate both new interventions and layered complexities. Reuse isn't a singular act—it's an ongoing transformation that extends into the future, connecting generations across time. In this spirit, the exhibition—which debuted at the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale and has since developed distinct focuses in Hamburg, Berlin, New York, and Shanghai—offers Munich audiences a localized perspective on how these principles take root.
