The competition for Düsseldorf's "Opera House of the Future" has reached its verdict. Four designs emerged victorious from the master planning competition. A 25-member jury, led by Heiner Farwick, awarded first place to Norwegian firm Snøhetta Oslo AS. Three other practices received recognition: HPP Architekten GmbH (Cologne/Düsseldorf) claimed second place; kister scheithauer gross architekten GmbH (Cologne) in collaboration with Studio Gang Architects (Chicago) took third; and wulf architekten (Stuttgart) rounded out the winners in fourth place.

Oberbürgermeister Dr. Stephan Keller, a jury member, commended the selected designs: "Beyond their creative impact and the rigorous evaluation of user needs, the four winning proposals stood out for their exceptional ability to integrate seamlessly into the existing urban fabric." Specialized consultants carefully vetted the cost implications for construction and operations—encompassing the opera house, Clara Schumann Music School, music library, and public spaces—ensuring the €1 billion budget target would be met. Jury chair Heiner Farwick, an architect and urban planner, emphasized the striking elegance of Snøhetta's winning proposal: "Divided into three carefully articulated segments, the building demonstrates a masterful response to its context, creating multiple visual connections throughout the city while expressing a refined architectural language."

The forum creates a distinctive atmosphere and establishes a gathering space for all Düsseldorf residents. Following the jury's decision, procurement negotiations will commence with all four winning firms to identify the most cost-effective proposal. The Düsseldorf city council is expected to make its final decision on appointing the general planner in the coming year.
