Nancy Holt: Circles of Light
Experiments with Sound, Image, and Objects 1966–1986
For over five decades, Nancy Holt has investigated how we perceive our environment and understand our place on Earth's surface. Opening in March 2024, Circles of Light marks the Gropius Bau's most comprehensive exhibition of the artist's work in Germany to date. Drawing from more than 25 years of practice, the show encompasses film, video, photography, sound works, concrete poetry, sculptures, immersive installations, drawings, and archival materials.
Throughout her career, Nancy Holt has fundamentally transformed how we engage with site-specific installations and the interplay of natural and artificial light. She was among the first to foreground ecological concerns, weaving Earth's rotation, astronomical phenomena, and temporal-spatial relationships into her sculptural practice—continuously inviting viewers to question what they think they know. At the Gropius Bau, the exhibition will be enriched by the artist's own writings and recorded reflections on her methodology.
"Over the years, these technical systems have become essential to our daily lives—yet we conceal them behind walls or bury them underground, pushing them into the unconscious. We struggle to acknowledge our near-total dependence on them."
— Nancy Holt
