Test installations in Eller showcase electric-powered heritage gas lamps

Four newly installed test sections across Düsseldorf-Eller demonstrate how the city's historic street lights will appear after transitioning from gas to electric power. Located within walking distance of one another, these installations can be found on Kündgensweg, Wäschlacker Weg, Frankensteiner Straße, and Am Hackenbruch. Each luminaire uses exclusively warm white light (2700 Kelvin), allowing visitors to compare the converted models directly with nearby conventional gas lights. The Kündgensweg features the newly electrified "Alt Düsseldorf" design, while Wäschlacker Weg (between Weichselstraße and Frankensteiner Straße) showcases LED top-mounted fixtures.

On Frankensteiner Straße, top-mounted fixtures between Wäschlacker Weg and Am Hackenbruch have also been converted. As protected heritage monuments, Düsseldorf's gas lanterns require careful treatment during this transition. In September 2023, the city council approved an ambitious conversion program, replacing the remaining 13,600 gas lights with energy-efficient LED systems. The plan preserves the distinctive exterior design of approximately 11,840 lanterns across five historic models: Alt Düsseldorf, Frankfurter, top-mounted, side-mounted, and row-mounted variants. The approved master plan "Energy-Efficient and Historic Street Lighting" makes one notable exception: lanterns within the Hofgarten garden monument will remain gas-powered. These test installations serve a crucial purpose—allowing city experts and Stadtwerke Düsseldorf AG to evaluate the converted lights under real-world conditions before rolling out the citywide program.
