Inter/Wall Festival 2024
Light artist illuminates historic building complex
Under the motto "Sharing the same spirit," the Inter/Wall Festival enters its fourth year. Light artist and Federal Cross of Merit recipient Michael Batz directs the program, transforming the award-winning architecture of Alter Wall 2-32 into an impressive ten-day spectacle from August 22 to September 1. The creator of the Blue Port will also illuminate four iconic Alsterfleet bridges as Blue Bridges, bathing them in magical light. Adding to the experience, Alte Wall 40 (formerly Sofitel) joins the illumination and sparkles every 30 minutes with atmospheric flash effects reminiscent of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The festival opens on August 22 with a fanfare concert and the Hamburg Police Orchestra performing beneath illuminated flags at the Alter Wall entrance. As dusk falls each evening, a radiant ring of light encircles the partially protected historic ensemble. From August 22–24, projections celebrating this year's festival theme light up the canal-side wall above the Marion Gräfin Dönhoff Bridge. Live concerts return on August 23 and 24. All illuminations, projections, and performances are free and open to the public.
This year marks a milestone with the festival's first concert at the soon-to-open Jazz Club Nica on August 23—the venue officially launches in November 2024. The Cosmic Latte jazz trio delivers catchy melodies, vibrant harmonies, and driving grooves that captivate audiences. On August 24, Hamburg's renowned Floodgate Brass Sextet returns with their signature canal-lock concert at the Rathausschleuse. As darkness descends, light art transforms the historic building's upper floors, elevators in Bucerius Passage, and four iconic bridges—Rathausschleusenbrücke, Marion-Gräfin-Dönhoff-Brücke, Adolphsbrücke, and Graskellerbrücke—into glowing works of art.
"Alte Wall represents far more than curated shopping and fine dining—from day one, it's been a destination for art, anchored by the Bucerius Kunst Forum and Olafur Eliasson's sculptural installations. With Inter/Wall, we've created a genuine cultural magnet that draws locals and visitors alike into Hamburg's heart. Events of this caliber reinforce our city's standing as northern Germany's most compelling metropolis," says Martin Wolfrat, Partner and Head of Hamburg at Art-Invest Real Estate.
"Alte Wall is both an artistic and premium destination. It stands as a vibrant boulevard with undeniable cultural significance—one that continues to captivate year after year. With the theme 'Sharing the same spirit,' we're inviting the diverse generations and nations who call Hamburg home—or visit it—to share an unforgettable moment together," says light artist Michael Batz.
