HGEsch: The Architectural View I – Pompeii

Exhibition at the Italian Cultural Institute in Cologne

Pompeii may seem exhaustively photographed – millions of tourists document this iconic archaeological site each year. Yet internationally acclaimed architectural photographer Hans Georg Esch (*1964), based in Blankenberg/Sieg, brings fresh perspective to this 2,500-year-old Roman settlement. Known for his striking images of global megacities, Esch presents the excavations as an integral part of modern-day Naples, situated in the shadow of Vesuvius. His work transcends traditional documentation: combining his distinctive eye for architectural presence with cutting-edge digital techniques—including drone photography—Esch reveals the archaeological layers of Pompeii in unprecedented ways.

The photographs illuminate striking connections between ancient urban planning and contemporary city design. What was once a vibrant, thriving settlement—later buried, now exposed in ruins—becomes tangible in new ways. This photographic approach aligns with evolving archaeological practice, which increasingly explores how ancient urban systems persist within modern settlement patterns, keeping the living essence of the ancient city alive through contemporary interpretation.
