Grow It, Show It?
Concert at Museum Folkwang
What do our hairstyles reveal about us? Museum Folkwang explores this compelling question through "Grow it, Show it! Hair from Diane Arbus to TikTok"—an exhibition spanning photographs, posters, record covers, and TikTok clips. The FKO transforms the museum into a concert hall, pairing these visual narratives with stunning chamber music.
Hair plays a crucial role in string music too. Horsehair on the bow is essential—without it, there would be no sound at all. But this concert goes beyond the mechanics of the instrument. We examine the hairstyles of legendary composers—what they reveal about the person and their music. Beethoven's untamed wild mane. Young Brahms's sleek pompadour, later crowned with a distinguished beard. Tchaikovsky's meticulously styled receding hairline and carefully composed facial hair. Composers were stars. They set trends—not just in music, but in culture itself. Could there be a deeper connection between hairstyle and musical expression? The FKO and KiKA presenter Juri Tetzlaff turn this question on its head, exploring hair in unexpected ways.
Chief conductor Johannes Klumpp has curated a special programme that journeys from the mid-20th century back through musical history. The conformists, the rebels, the visionaries—do their compositional voices echo in their hairstyles? Does a "tidy" look suggest disciplined, structured music, while a wild head of hair hints at untamed creativity? Join the FKO for a musical investigation at Museum Folkwang: a playful, engaging concert that asks whether your hair reveals who you truly are as an artist.
