First Stage of the "Benrather Rochade"
New Benrath Secondary School Marks Topping-Out Milestone
Extensive renovation needs at both Benrath Castle Grammar School and Benrath Municipal Secondary School prompted a comprehensive rethinking of their location strategy. The initiative, dubbed the "Benrather Rochade," involves relocating the school to vacant land along Benrodestraße/Marbacher Straße, while simultaneously transforming the former school campus into a vibrant, intergenerational residential neighborhood.
This past August marked a significant milestone: the topping-out ceremony for the new secondary school. Spanning 16,925 square meters of gross floor area, the building is part of an integrated campus that also includes the new grammar school (17,565 square meters) and a flexible quadruple sports hall—all three structures conceived as a unified architectural composition. The roofs feature both photovoltaic installations and extensive green spaces.
The complete school campus project carries a total investment of approximately €178.5 million. Construction is on track for completion during the 2024/2025 school year. WollenweberArchitektur designed the master plan, with Industrieterrains Düsseldorf-Reisholz AG (IDR) serving as the general contractor.
