Simply Built!

Exhibition: The Arcaded Houses of Dessau-Törten

The exhibition showcases the arcaded apartment blocks built by the Bauhaus Dessau in 1930 as a remarkably prescient response to housing challenges we still face today. Designed under Hannes Meyer's leadership with contributions from students, these buildings embody the principle of "meeting people's needs, not their luxuries." The projects addressed three core requirements: efficient construction methods, affordable housing, and quality living standards for everyone. What distinguishes these adaptable rental buildings is their clarity of design—a restrained aesthetic that nonetheless delivered modern hygiene and technical amenities despite low rents. The exhibition contextualizes these structures within their political, social, and economic landscape, bringing an actual building section into the gallery to make this vision tangible.

"Simply Built!" reveals the functionalist logic underlying these arcaded houses and invites you to explore what their design principles can teach us about sustainable housing today.
