The City is the Sport
Cities in Motion: Examples from Across Europe
Sport and movement are essential elements for active civic engagement and cohesive urban life. In recent years, this trend has become increasingly visible across European cities: public green spaces and open areas are being transformed into temporary and permanent destinations for sport, play, and movement. This exhibition, which debuted in Frankfurt's urban landscape, now showcases twelve projects from across Europe that integrate athletic activity and movement into the city fabric in innovative ways—from premier urban football pitches in prime city locations to riverfront parks offering diverse sporting programs, to schoolyards that open their recreational and sports facilities to the surrounding neighborhoods. These projects, realized over the past 15 years, span an impressive range: from ambitious new designs and adaptive reuse strategies to subtle interventions that respectfully enhance existing spaces.
Visitors experience the exhibition itself as an active sports and fitness playground: a mat area, various calisthenics equipment, a cross-cricket station, and a bowling alley are available for shared workouts. Additionally, workshops and sporting events organized in partnership with Frankfurt's Sports Association bring the DAM regularly to life—join in and get involved!
