Historic District Earns DGNB Gold Certification

Plange Mühle Campus Achieves Certification Under New Category

The Plange Mühle Campus has officially earned DGNB Gold status, recognizing it as a sustainable, resilient, and liveable urban quarter. As a protected historic site, it represents a breakthrough: the first historic district to achieve certification under the new DGNB category for existing quarters. The award will premiere at Expo Real 2025 in Munich. The site was developed by Harbour Properties Development with architecture by christoph ingenhoven architects.

Situated on the grounds of the former Plange Mill—an industrial grain facility established in 1906—the campus exemplifies the successful transformation from industrial site to vibrant mixed-use quarter. Spanning over 30,000 m² of rentable space, it seamlessly blends offices, health services, showrooms, restaurants, and lifestyle brands within its historic setting. An additional 10,000+ m² reserve ensures room for future growth and investment. The roster of tenants reads like a directory of excellence: Boffi, SRAM, IBM, international fashion houses, premium cosmetics firms, and specialized medical facilities including an orthopedic clinic and radiology center. This mix creates a living ecosystem where work, wellness, design, and innovation converge. The DGNB Gold award reflects the campus's exceptional urban design and architectural integrity, energy-efficient systems, and forward-thinking mobility solutions. Particular praise went to the thoughtful restoration of historic structures, resource conservation, integrated green spaces, and seamless public transit connectivity. Social sustainability proved equally important: the deliberate combination of professional, health, design, and public uses has forged an accessible, community-focused neighborhood that actively revitalizes Düsseldorf's Media Harbour.

The Plange Mühle Campus anchors Düsseldorf's Media Harbour on the site of the former Plange grain mill, a location rich with history. The story begins in 1906 with the grand opening of the "Diamantmehl-Mühle" (diamond flour mill). Its distinctive ensemble—crowned by a clock tower and bronze eagle atop a reclaimed headland—quickly became an iconic landmark of Düsseldorf's waterfront. Today, Plange Mühle stands as a historic urban quarter where tradition and contemporary uses coexist, creating a place where work, health, design, and lifestyle thrive in a sustainably designed environment.
