The Architecture of Transformation research group at TU Berlin explores the untapped potential of historic building stock through the exhibition "The Rental House and the Housing Question" at Tuntenhaus. Faced with a stagnant rental market and a severe shortage of affordable housing, the student projects advocate moving away from an exclusive focus on new construction toward activating the so-called invisible vacancy in turn-of-the-century residential buildings. Through architectural interventions and new models of shared living, the exhibition examines how the typical Berlin apartment block can be developed for the future through communally organized housing arrangements and social diversity.

The presentation features adaptive development scenarios that demonstrate how thoughtfully negotiating the balance between private retreats and shared spaces can increase occupancy density without sacrificing quality. The student work understands the rental building as an experimental living laboratory for a sustainable retrofitting practice that integrates ecological, economic, and social considerations. Throughout the exhibition period, the venue functions as an open discourse space where visitors are invited to engage with the students in discussions about transformation processes and exchange ideas about individual housing potential.
