Brick Award 2024: Winners announced
Five winning projects selected from 743 submissions
The international Brick Award, launched by Wienerberger in 2004 and held every two years to promote innovation and outstanding achievements in brick architecture, was presented for the eleventh time in Vienna at a festive award ceremony attended by around 200 invited guests.
With a total of 743 entries from 54 countries, this year's competition once again demonstrated the relevance and innovative potential of brick architecture worldwide. From a shortlist of 50 nominees, the jury selected winning projects in five categories – "Feeling at home", "Living together", "Working together", "Shared public spaces" and "Building outside the box" – as well as an overall winner based on criteria such as aesthetics, sustainability and innovation.
Architects today face several major challenges simultaneously. They must create spaces that reduce our impact on the planet and protect us from the consequences of climate change, but also make housing more affordable, as the cost of living has risen dramatically in recent years. To find answers to these questions, outstanding architects are breaking new ground in the use of materials and structures, as demonstrated by this year's Brick Award winners. Beyond their aesthetic and structural qualities, their projects are an expression of the spirit of innovation needed to meet today's challenges. From the careful use of resources to building in existing structures, these creative minds have found solutions that fully exploit the still enormous potential of brick. We are proud to honour and support these pioneers," emphasises Heimo Scheuch, CEO of Wienerberger.
From residential spaces to artistic installations: the winners showcase what brick architecture can achieve. The award carries a total prize fund of €27,000—€7,000 for the overall winner and €5,000 each for the category winners.
