"Building in a New World"

Lecture presented as part of the "Stuttgart Central Station" exhibition

Stuttgart 21 ranks among Germany's most watched construction projects. For over 15 years, the city of Stuttgart has been transforming its central railway station—a landmark project in the heart of Baden-Württemberg's capital. The first trains are set to arrive by year's end, with the official opening scheduled for 2026. At the German Museum's Transport Centre, you can explore the station's evolution and experience a 360° immersive view into the underground platform hall. The exhibition is accompanied by a full program of discussions and expert presentations.

"Stuttgart Central Station" is the centerpiece special exhibition at the German Museum's Transport Centre, running through October 19. Displayed across the gallery in Hall III, an array of photographs, films, graphics, and two monumental models chronicle a station that embodies the defining principles of our era: the seamless integration of architecture, engineering, and sustainability. The exhibition's crowning feature is a striking rotunda—more than four meters high and nearly ten meters in diameter—where visitors step into an enveloping 360° view of the underground station's active construction.

The exhibition features a 360° panorama that immerses visitors in the construction site of the new station. HG Esch's high-resolution photography captures the spatial experience of the future platform hall with its iconic chalice columns. The program's centerpiece is the lecture "Building in a New World" by
