Timeless Architecture for a Heritage Clinker Manufacturer

Gillrath_36_19_700pixel

It's the only one in North Rhine-Westphalia and among the last remaining in Germany: the ring kiln at Gillrath. While most competitors have switched to tunnel kilns, this family business has remained faithful to its traditional heart—and with good reason. The ring kiln alone produces clinker with its distinctive colour palette and unmistakable character.

The brickworks sits quietly on the outskirts of Erkelenz, along the road toward Wockerath. Here, Viethen Architects designed a modern exhibition and office building that serves as both landmark and wayfinding beacon. This two-storey, rounded structure aligns with the ring kiln's axis while simultaneously marking the customer entrance to the site. The proportions are refined and understated—entirely free of grandeur. Solid, humble, timeless, and traditional: the building embodies the values of this family enterprise. Constructed as a classic, double-shell masonry system, the insulated facing shell uses thin-format Gillrath clinker bricks to reinterpret the possibilities of traditional brickwork. Staggered stone courses frame the slender window openings, while the metal windows—with their delicate, finely drawn mullions—echo the industrial architecture of the firm's founding era. Angled stone rows crown the façade's upper edge, while recessed, dark mortar joints allow the stone itself to shine.

The industrial aesthetic carries through to the interior as well. Exposed brickwork, exposed concrete ceilings, polished screed floors with brick-dust aggregate, and a deliberately raw reception counter all reinforce the industrial spirit. The result speaks to a philosophy of essentials: clear lines, balanced proportions, a carefully edited palette of harmonious materials, and meticulous detailing create an inviting atmosphere. The focus on brick—and proximity to where it's made—defines the space. There's a distinct fascination in knowing each brick is handcrafted, an appreciation deepened by expert guidance on design and application. The exhibition invites visitors to explore the full breadth of the company's extensive product range firsthand.
