Close to nature

Wooden house with garden relies on local materials and insect-friendly lighting

Shortly after the old building on this plot was demolished, the clients commissioned Andreas Käpplinger from the garden and landscaping company Otto Arnold to plan the gardens. This enabled close cooperation and continuous coordination between the planning of the new residential building and the surrounding open spaces. This concerned, for example, the sanitary and electrical planning as well as the pool to be integrated. The plot on which the sustainable timber house from manufacturer Baufritz stands is not large - but the clients' wishes for its use are. The challenge was therefore to design the available open space in the best possible way in order to create the desired quality of living and use. Today, when the clients use their garden intensively, they describe it as their second and third living room, a place to switch off after a long day at the computer.

The clients and planners agreed that the garden should be characterized by local materials, earthy natural tones and diverse areas. All the paving and steps are made of sandblasted Jura, which is quarried in the nearby Franconian Alb. The light beige, warm and Mediterranean look as well as the fine play of quartz veins with fossil inclusions are generally very suitable for garden design. The façade of the house is also light beige to match the Jura. The fence elements used as privacy screens were also produced in the region. The rectangular pool is designed as a 6.40 x 3.30 meter prefabricated pool with a wide Jura surround and is complemented by an outdoor shower with hot and cold water.

As cold, intense and widely diffused lighting outdoors attracts insects very strongly, warm white or warm golden subdued light was used. The low color temperature is barely visible to insects and therefore attracts them less. The basic lighting consists of tree and bed spotlights as well as accent lights. A zinc water feature splashes against the patio and the garden features a variety of garden furniture and chests, a fire pit with a fire bowl, a bench made of ancient gnarled wood - an original design - and various planters. The green and colorful garden splendor is watered fully automatically and maintained around five times a year by the gardening company.
