Successful connection
Half-timbered house receives new semi-detached house
On a hill in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Land region, Cologne architect Martin Wendling realized a gabled house that blends harmoniously into the existing context. It presents itself strikingly and impressively on the main road in Rösrath-Forstbach, bordering a park at the side, in the middle of which a memorial commemorates the fallen of the two world wars.
To its left, the new building is connected to a half-timbered house, which was originally part of a half-timbered semi-detached house and was extended in the 1990s. However, as the semi-detached house on the right was dilapidated, Wendling Architektur developed a new building to complement the ensemble of buildings. "In order to visually connect the old and new buildings, we decided to continue the gabled roof," explains the architect.
The new building contains two residential units with separate entrances. While the apartment on the first floor is accessed from the street via a single-flight staircase, the apartment on the first floor has a rear entrance. When you enter the lower apartment, you will find a large living/dining area and two further rooms. The apartment on the upper floor offers considerably more space, with the central living room extending over two floors up to the pointed gable roof. This room houses an open spiral staircase that leads to a roof loggia. Below this are two further rooms that connect to the main room. In both residential units, the main rooms are located in the gabled part of the house, while the secondary rooms are housed in the connecting section to the neighboring semi-detached house.
In addition to the harmonious visual combination of old and new, great importance was attached to the use of sustainable and high-quality materials in this project. Not only are there ecological insulation materials and aluminum windows, but also ash wood parquet flooring and a steel spiral staircase. In addition, the walls have a mineral structure and are plastered both inside and out.
