A garden shed and carport frame a new home within an established neighbourhood

Established neighbourhoods offer a distinct charm—mature gardens, time-honoured relationships, stately trees, and fully formed streetscapes. Yet constraints exist too: not everything fits the existing character. This project in Rodenkirchen proves otherwise. HPA+ Architektur designed a new home for a family of four that respects its surroundings, setting the residence back from the street edge just as neighbouring properties do. A garden shed and carport with storage flank the main house, anchoring what might otherwise feel too open. Together, the whitewashed brick façade gives the ensemble an almost familial character—and more importantly, creates the kind of welcoming space where family life truly thrives.

Here, sightlines and vistas aren't just allowed—they're celebrated. The sculptural steel staircase stands like an exhibit behind expansive glass, revealing how the floors connect and interact. Three-dimensional spatial design creates views that travel not only horizontally but across vertical planes and between levels. The layout flows intuitively: shared, open living on the ground floor transitions seamlessly to more intimate spaces above and under the roof. Warm parquet even graces the steel steps, paired with terrazzo in high-traffic zones—entrance, guest bath, kitchen—and soft carpeting in bedrooms and dressing areas. This is lived-in architecture, evident in every material choice.
Life unfolds on multiple levels and extends into the garden itself. Varied window proportions create visual rhythm and surprise rather than uniform floor-to-ceiling glass. Framed by the garden shed and house, the terrace becomes an outdoor room; thoughtful planting transforms it into a protected courtyard. The meticulously designed landscape complements the architecture, creating one harmonious composition. Here, play, laughter, and joy aren't just permitted—they're invited.
