City of Women Photographers Frankfurt 1844-2024
Exhibition at the Historical Museum Frankfurt
Until September 22, the Historisches Museum Frankfurt is showing the special exhibition "Stadt der Fotografinnen. Frankfurt 1844-2024". Since the invention of photography, Frankfurt has attracted female photographers who have had a regional, national and international impact. The close relationship between photography and the cityscape gave rise to a variety of motifs and content, which are presented in "Stadt der Fotografininnen. Frankfurt 1844-2024" in the works of 40 female photographers. In their exploration of social themes and photographic genres, generation-specific and cross-genre connections become clear - across all genres: from photojournalism to architecture, fashion, portrait and theater photography to artistic photographic concepts.
Ilse Bing, Barbara Klemm, Gisèle Freund and Mara Eggert are known far beyond the city. Other women photographers who were well-known in their time have hardly been recognized by the general public. The HMF is dedicating the entire 1,000 m² special exhibition space to them and, according to curator Dorothee Linnemann, hopes to inspire further study of the many outstanding Frankfurt women photographers. The exhibition extends to the present day and shows that Frankfurt has established itself from a center of photojournalism to an international location for photographic art and artists.
City of Women Photographers" is accompanied by a rich program of events including intergenerational discussions with the photographers, film screenings, workshops and guided tours. The comprehensive accompanying book (320 pages, over 350 illustrations, 9 essays, 40 biographies) is published by Wienand-Verlag and costs 45 euros.
