Inter/Wall Festival 2024
Light artist illuminates historic building ensemble
The Inter/Wall Festival is entering its fourth year under the motto "Sharing the same spirit". Under the artistic direction of light artist and Federal Cross of Merit recipient Michael Batz, the award-winning architecture at Alter Wall 2-32 will be impressively staged for ten days from August 22 to September 1. The inventor of the Blue Port will also bathe four well-known bridges on the Alsterfleet in magical light as Blue Bridges. As a special highlight, the Alte Wall 40 (former Sofitel) will also be included in the lighting and will even shine every 30 minutes with atmospheric flashing light effects like the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Under the illuminated flags on the front façade of the building, at the entrance to the Alter Wall, a fanfare concert with wind instruments and an opening concert with the Hamburg Police Orchestra will take place on August 22. At dusk, a wreath of light will shine around the partly listed building ensemble. From August 22 up to and including August 24, projections of this year's festival motto will be on display on the canal side above the Marion-Gräfin-Dönhoff Bridge. Concerts will also take place on August 23 and 24. The illumination, projections and concerts are freely accessible and free of charge.
The Inter/Wall Festival will celebrate a premiere this year with a concert in front of the Nica jazz club currently under construction on the Fleet side on August 23; the club will officially open in November 2024. The jazz trio Cosmic Latte combines catchy themes, colorful chords, elegant harmonies and driving grooves. In addition, Hamburg's only lock concert by the Floodgate Brass Sextet will once again take place on August 24 at the Rathausschleuse. At dusk, the upper floor of the historic building, several elevators in the Bucerius Passage and the bridges Rathausschleusenbrücke, Marion-Gräfin-Dönhoff-Brücke, Adolphsbrücke and Graskellerbrücke will be impressively staged by light art.
"Alter Wall not only stands for specially curated and upmarket shopping options and select restaurants, but has also had a focus on art from the very beginning with the Bucerius Kunst Forum and the art sculptures by Olafur Eliasson. With the Inter/Wall light art festival, we have now created a real art magnet that attracts Hamburg residents and tourists alike to the city center. Such events help Hamburg to further underline its reputation as the most attractive metropolis in northern Germany," says Martin Wolfrat, Partner and Head of Hamburg at Art-Invest Real Estate.
"The Alte Wall is an art and premium location. It has a special value in the city and proves time and again to be a lively boulevard with great appeal. This year, under the motto 'Sharing the same spirit', we want to invite the different generations and nations who live in or visit our city to an unforgettable shared experience," comments light artist Michael Batz.
