HGEsch: The architectural view I - Pompeii
Exhibition at the Italian Cultural Institute Cologne
Pompeii is actually considered to be quite "photographed out" - not least because millions of tourists capture this hotspot of ancient excavations anew every year. The internationally renowned architectural photographer Hans Georg Esch (*1964), who runs his photo studio in Blankenberg/Sieg, has nevertheless taken a new look at the over 2500-year-old Roman settlement with his team: The photographer, who is known for his iconic images of global mega-cities, shows the archaeological excavations as part of today's metropolis of Naples at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. He photographs Pompeii not only with his specific eye, which detects architecture in its visual presence, but also with the latest digital recording techniques, such as the use of drones.
The images show the connections and parallels between urban planning from antiquity and our urban structures today. The once lively and animated urban structure, then buried and now revealed in its ruins, becomes more tangible than ever before. This photographic approach coincides with new approaches in archaeology, which are increasingly concerned with the continued existence of the era in today's settlement structures and the image of the ancient city kept alive.
