The demolition question & power to renovation

German Architecture Center presents exhibition

The exhibition "The Demolition Question & Power to Renovation", which opens on March 13, approaches the still all too present phenomenon of demolition and its consequences from various perspectives.

The exhibition and publication project "The Demolition Question", curated by Alexander Stumm, shows around one hundred buildings recently demolished or threatened with demolition in Berlin, Kassel, Munich and the state of Brandenburg. Based on the work of several universities, demolition stories are told and the ecological, political, socio-economic and architectural-cultural consequences of a practice anchored in fossil modernism are analyzed. The exhibition also draws attention to current activist anti-demolition projects and declares the demolition issue to be one of the central challenges of our time, alongside the housing and land issues.

Demolition not only destroys large amounts of energy, emissions and resources tied up in the buildings, but also destroys a large amount of affordable housing. The fact that this practice is part of real estate speculation is illustrated by "Power of Renovation", a film project by the Europe-wide initiative HouseEurope! It calls for renovation and modernization to be prioritized over demolition and new construction in favour of more ecologically and socially effective building practices. You are welcome to vote for the EU Citizens' Initiative in the booth at the DAZ. The exhibition is on display until May 18.
