The Sound of Metal

Exhibition at Munich's Architecture Gallery

Craftsmanship, building culture, and art converge when architects and craftspeople collaborate to create buildings, structures, and urban spaces that shape our world. The exhibition "The Sound of Metal" at Architekturgalerie München showcases works from Kunstschmiede und Metallbau Neumaier (KMN), revealing the architectural excellence and masterful craftsmanship inherent in metalwork—one of humanity's oldest trades.

Spanning two floors, this exhibition celebrates KMN's 50 years in business by exploring the history of metalworking, its diverse specializations and applications, the creative dialogue between craft and architecture, and the remarkable resonance between metal and music across cultures. A compelling journey through steel production—from ore extraction and smelting to raw material processing—unveils the intricate craftsmanship behind one of our most versatile and essential materials.

KMN
Based in Forstern near Munich, Kunstschmiede und Metallbau Neumaier has been a leading force in metalwork since 1974. The exhibition "The Sound of Metal" celebrates the company's 50-year legacy. Christian Neumaier (born 1965) represents the second generation, leading the company as master craftsman and entrepreneur. Beyond his metalworking practice, Neumaier collaborates with architect partner Hildegard Rasthofer as the art duo Rasthofer/Neumaier, whose monumental metal sculptures grace public spaces, museums, and private collections worldwide.

The exhibition is on view across the first and second floors of Architekturgalerie München.

Hours: Wednesday–Saturday, 2pm–6pm

Join us on Tuesday, September 24, at 7 p.m. for a panel discussion exploring the intersection of craftsmanship, art, architecture, and metalwork as part of the "Sound of Metal" exhibition.
