A Spirited Season Opener
Classical Concerts at Villa Hügel
Curious, innovative, and performing at the highest musical level—yet rooted in Essen and the Folkwang ethos for 67 years—the Folkwang Chamber Orchestra Essen (FKO) brings a distinctive energy to every concert. With vibrant performances that celebrate the sheer joy of music-making, the ensemble captivates audiences of all ages, offering fresh perspectives and new musical discoveries through carefully curated programs. Artistic excellence, vitality, and infectious enthusiasm define the FKO, creating an ideal platform for emerging guest artists and rising conductors while launching international careers. This season marks the orchestra's 67th year, as it continues its ambitious project to record Mozart's complete symphonic works. The season opens with one of Mozart's most iconic melodies: "Eine kleine Nachtmusik"—a work that transcends its earworm status to reveal itself as a brilliantly crafted piece of compositional genius. The String Quintet in C minor is equally a night music composition: Mozart originally conceived it as a wind octet before reimagining it for strings. Between its mysteriously evocative outer movements lies an enchanting andante—a movement that unfolds like a peaceful evening walk. Principal conductor Johannes Klumpp pairs these Mozart selections with an elegant Viennese piano concerto, where the composer showcases his dual mastery as both composer and virtuoso pianist. The expressive solo part features Nikola Meeuwsen, a young, multi-award-winning Dutch pianist, making his debut with the FKO.
